October is Vegetarian Month so I'll be posting quite a bit on the benefits of passing up that too-large portion of chicken or steak every night on top of that chicken sandwhich for lunch and the bacon and sausage you maybe had for breakfast. ;)

FDA At It Again.

Anything pure, wholesome, natural and God-given is a target to the FDA.  They will not be happy until all our rights are stripped away and we are a docile, drug-laden herd of Americans.  News articles like this one:

Awhile ago I was curious if there was a better way to cut up a watermelon - one that didn't take half my life and wasn't so messy.  I got on YouTube and was very happy with the first video I clicked on:


I love that this older guy is up with the technology and posting videos on YouTube.  I don't even know how to edit videos...I'm sure it would be easy if I just decided to learn how.  But I don't and he does so I think he's cool.  

Anyway, I had this mini watermelon and I cut it using the fancy new way I learned and went outside to enjoy the sunshine, ate my melon out of it's 'bowl' and read a good book.  Yay!

I'm a religious person and my religion tells us to eat very little meat, only in times of winter or famine.  There are great many reason for avoiding meat, both health and environmental.  I encourage all my friends and family (and anybody who may read this little blog of mine) to consider eating less meat.  And who knows?  From there you may decide to cut it out completely. I did - and I never thought I'd see the day!!

Vegan Smash Cake :)

My little baby turned 1! It was an exciting and fun celebration for us.  It was also a little crazy on my end because I wanted him to have the smash cake experience but I didn't want him to have any of the cake!

I contemplated doing just a vegetable or fruit, such as an apple.  I researched raw desserts like crazy but, as raw desserts always have nuts as a base, I didn't want to take the chance of some sort of nut reaction.  Now, my baby up until about 1 month ago, has been exclusively breastfed.  He hasn't shown much interest in food until recently and so now we have introduced foods that we can give him that are as much in their raw natural state as possible - specifically fruits.  Out of curiosity we let him try something (now I can't remember what it was) other than fruit or veggie and he didn't care for it.  So with that in mind, I decided to make him a cake because I didn't think he would have any interest in putting any in his mouth anyway.

I actually did two different recipes.  One for his 1 year pictures and one for his birthday party.
I ended up going with a vegan carrot cake recipes that didn't have any sugar in it.  

In this picture, I used the 'Single Lady Cupcake' recipes called Five Minute Carrot Cake from Chocolate Covered Katie.  Her desserts look delish and I thought this carrot cake would have a super cute look paired with my kiddos outfit.  As expected, he didn't care to eat it, he only cared to swirl the stuff on the ground with the candle :)   I used Coconut Milk frosting instead of some vegan soy crap.  I had to do a bit of experimenting with that one, too and I'll have another post on that.




For his big birthday bash I made him a big smash cake.  Although in hind sight I kind of wish I wouldn't have worried about the cake itself since I already knew he wouldn't eat it and just worried about what was on top.  Instead I worried about both.  

For this cake, I used a recipe found on this blog.  I made a little variation and used the rest of my spelt flour instead of wheat flour and I made it into a cake using a round cake pan instead of going with the cupcakes.  I  wasn't too impressed with the taste though (I stole a bite after the smashing was done - hence why I wish I wouldn't have worried about having actual cake under that frosting - it ended up being a waste).  I was, however, super happy with my raw chocolate icing found on one of my favorite raw dessert websites, The Rawtarian.  You can find this particular recipe here and I liked it a lot because it was so simple and made with ingredients I already had on hand. It's creamy and has a dark chocolate taste which normally I wouldn't care for but Husband and I wanted to keep on licking. It also spread incredibly easy. 

Again, my baby wasn't too into smashing.  He was a little curious but I think he has a thing about getting super dirty!  He had to have help from some kiddos to get a little dirtier :)  I thought he would actually like eating this frosting because I let him lick a little off the spatula when I made it and he was really into it.  However, when I helped him out and put some in his mouth, he gagged.  Not the first time he'd done that but   I promise it wasn't because the recipe sucked cuz it didn't..or doesn't!

1. TBHQ, A.K.A: Butane

Turns out butane isn't just for lighters anymore - it's also an artificial antioxidant that they put it in chicken nuggets to keep them "fresh" tasting. So instead of your chicken nuggets being fresh, butane keeps them "fresh." Eating butane probably wasn't what you had in mind last time you lit up, got the munchies, and ordered those nuggets. Try homemade chicken wings instead, for fuel-free food.

 Frozen, packaged or pre-made processed foods with long shelf lives such as frozen meals, crackers, chips, cereal bars and fast food.


2. Estrogen

Regular milk is full of hormones used by the milk industry to keep the cows knocked up and lactating all year round. Sound gross? It is. So when you drink regular milk you take a shot of hormones with it. And all you wanted was a bowl of cereal.

 All non-organic dairy, so organic is recommended. 



3. Spinach Dust

Think that green sheen on your veggie snacks is giving you your daily serving of vegetables? Think again. That's just powdered spinach dust, which is spinach that has been dehydrated and sucked dry of its nutritional value. So the upshot is that green sheen is about as nutritious as actual dust.

4. Propylene Glycol, A.K.A: antifreeze 

Antifreeze is used in cars, pills, cosmetics, deodorant, moisturizer... And, in a way, food! It keeps your car from freezing over, your moisturizer moist, and your fat-free cookie dough ice cream creamy, smooth and juicy. If it's good enough for your SUV it's good enough to eat, right? Right?? Right???

5. Wood Pulp: Vanillin 

Vanillin, which is a byproduct of the pulp industry, is used as an artificial vanilla flavor. Ester of wood resin, which comes from pine stumps, is in citrus-flavored sodas to keep the citrus flavor evenly distributed through the can

6. Castoreum

Castoreum comes out of a beaver's behind - it's extracted from their anal glands and is used to make artificial raspberry flavoring. Try not to think about that next time you order the diet raspberry tea.

Found in: Artificially raspberry flavored products such as cheap ice cream, Jell-O, candy, fruit-flavored drinks, teas and yogurts.

  Even if you don't think you have a hormone issue, if you don't have fertility issues I still URGE you to listen to this interview. These are very important issues that most people aren't even aware of!!! It's a short video (short considering the lengthy topic of each subtopic covered) but is a great overview and eye opener because the majority of women don't know these truths!!!  Dr. Sellman has so much great information here:




  • Besides the fact that this covers mostly hormones, the underlying message that I love is that we HAVE TO GET HEALTHY!!  We have to understand what truly being healthy means and we have to take action!  Our bodies are crying out for us to heal ourselves, to treat the cause  and not the symptoms (which is what traditional medical doctors are trained to do).
  • It was probably about ten years ago that I first learned the dangers of birth control.  Besides all of the things Dr. Sellman mentions, the biggest thing that stood out to me at that time was that you automatically earn yourself a nasty case of Candida - which is another source of health problems too numerous to count here.  It so important to me to never be on birth control and I'm so happy I stuck with that decision!
  •  A lot of this applies to men, too!  They are half of the equation in conceiving and creating healthy children.  They are affected by hormones as well.  Testicular cancer, as well as breast cancer, is caused largely by the excess of estrogen in the body.  Did you know that if you are buying and consuming meat from the grocery store, you are buying and consuming meat that is pumped full of estrogen, not to mention antibiotics and diseases?  Something like that contributes to too much estrogen in the body!  
  • If the mammogram portion seems a bit too 'out there', please don't brush it off! It's true! It's true I tell you!!  I won't allow my mother (yes, you read that right) to get a mammogram.   The agenda that women need to get mammograms regularly is simply outrageous.  The radiation exposure causes cancer.  It's not new news that radiation causes cancer.  The radiation from cell phones, routers, wireless devices, baby monitors, etc is a scary, serious issue.

MMR Causes Autsim?

Proof of the link between vaccines (and specifically the MMR) and autism continues.  For me, personally, there is nothing that the drug companies could say or do that would convince me that vaccines 'really are safe'.  For me, the proof is in the thousands of parents who watch their children change overnight after having received their shots.  It's not coincidental.  I have read many reports by parents whose children suffer the exact same thing as mentioned below (loss of apetite, screaming from being in pain, etc).  It was enough to convince me.

Saying NO to Vaccines.

Another vaccine post!  I read this interview with Dr. Tenpenny on how to legally say NO to vaccines.  
I read it and am in total agreeance with everything she stated.  I also checked out her website DrTenpenny.com and, while I don't have time right now to really research everything on her site, just by glancing over it I can tell that this will be a great resource for me.  If you're a little curious about all the debate going on about vaccines, you'll want to check out this website.  Answers and proof that vaccines are ineffective are out there - and I am glad I came across this site that has so many of them in one place.

The Dark Side of Calorie Counting

A great article by Sheleana from Young and Raw called The Dark Side of Calorie Counting on why calorie counting isn't all it's cracked up to be.  For the longest time, I refused to calorie count.  I just made sure I was eating mostly 'healthy'.  And compared to most Americans living off the Standard American Diet (so SAD, indeed), I was.  But when I was in college, my health and my health knowledge isn't what it is today.  But even then, I still didn't calorie count.  The only time I did was a short period of time when I was working on getting into 'Bodybuilder Shape' and in that world macronutrient and calorie needs are monitored very closely.  It worked for me - I lost body fat and looked the best I had in my life....however, I wasn't quite where I wanted to be and knew that I could be.  But at that time, while I was eating milk or processed foods and the like, I was still eating meat, cottage cheese and the like.  I then became pregnant.  Fast forward 9 months, and my changes that I was making for the benefit of my baby, took my health to a whole new level.  I wasn't planning on cutting out meat, but it happened (and I love it!!).  I didn't make it a goal to be Vegan (well, mostly Vegan right now!) but suddenly it just happened.  And one of the many plus sides to that??  I don't have to count calories - I have never even bothered since I had my baby.  I don't count protein or carbs or sugar. I eat plants as much as I possibly can and the weight (more specifically the body fat) just rolls off.  I do lift weights three times a week and try to squeeze in some High Intensity Interval Training or a jog or a walk with my baby whenever I can.  But no calorie counting here for me - not again!

There are also some great tips on what to do and what NOT to do to lose weight! I agree with them!

Chemicals and Health Risks



Define Quality.

We hosted a surprise party a couple weekends ago and during clean up I happened to grab this container of macaroni salad somebody brought just to check out how super nasty the ingredients list would be.  It was super nasty indeed:




And then I read that is 'made from scratch every day using quality ingredients'.  Hmmm?  Since when is soybean oil, sodium benzoate, calcium chloride, etc considered quality ingredients?  And made from scratch?  I don't think so.


And yikes!  Check out those fat calories.  That alone would be enough to scare most people before they even got to the ingredients list.  This would probably take a week or ten for your body to digest! Just more proof we need to eat less of the processed, chemical-laden junk and more wonderfully raw and nutritious foods!

Detoxify Your Home

I love this article on Detoxifying Your Home by Dawn Lorenz over at Raising Natural Kids.   I plan on buying several glass drinking bottles, even one for my little one.  I have also been collecting and compiling recipes for homemade cleaners, soaps, etc.  When I can get it all organized, I'll pass it along.  Hopefully I will also have been able to put some to the test and can share that as well!

10 Tips For A Healthy Pregnancy

My own little note about #2 - Folic Acid.  I would encourage pregnant women and those trying to conceive to EAT their folate as much as possible.  Here is a list of some sources high in folate from WH Foods.  I myself never took a prenatal vitamin.  I don't trust anything pharmaceutical and I would never trust anything off the shelf of Wal-mart or GNC, either.  I was given a couple samples from my OBGYN, I took them into my holistic health care provider (mostly out of curiosity) and he found, through Kinesiology, that they weren't effective at all and one of them my body rejected, which meant it was harmful.  I did take a Folic Acid supplement, which my body and my growing baby tested positive for, made by Standard Process.

Dangers of Aluminum


Dr. Mercola interviews Dr. David Ayoub about the dangers of the aluminum in vaccines and their relation to several major illnesses including, but not limited to Alzheimer's, ADHD and, of course, Autism.   Aluminum is not only in our vaccines but deodorant, cookware, toothpaste and much more.

Some key things that stood out to me (some of these notes were also displayed below the video so I copy and pasted them and colored them purple, because purple is cool) were the following:
You will find aluminum in the earth’s crust, and in air, soil and water. However, although aluminum is a common, “natural” substance, it’s important to realize that it has absolutely no biological role inside your body.
Mercury levels may have gone down in vaccines (I'm sure because of all of the bad rep) but Aluminum levels have basically skyrocketed.  
Based on the number of vaccines given, children today are receiving 17 shots that contain aluminum, compared to four vaccines in the 1970s into the mid-80s. According to Dr. Ayoub’s calculations, the milligram dose of aluminum received has more than doubled in that time.    So yes, 30 or 40 years ago, we were all administered vaccines and Autism wasn't as prevalent then  as it is now...but the amount of vaccines and the toxicity of each of those vaccines has drastically changed.
This can have significant implications, as aluminum is not only toxic in and of itself, but it also impairs your body’s ability to excrete mercury, and it impairs glutathione synthesis. As a consequence, aluminum will make whatever amount of mercury you have in your system even more toxic.   Dr. Ayoub then says that with the aluminum interfering with the body's ability to excrete mercury, enter the flu shot (full of mercury) and you have even more cause for concern.
Remember, you and your children are exposed to mercury from other sources as well, not just vaccines. Fish and amalgam dental fillings are two major sources of mercury exposure as well.

I really REALLY urge you to take the time to listen to this interview.   I listened to the whole thing, probably in 30-40 minutes while sitting at the computer taking care of some things so I could multi-task.  It's very eye-opening and as Dr. Mercola put it:  "just one more nail in the coffin" against vaccines.  I, too, believe that there are safer, more effective alternative ways to protect yourself against diseases than to load you or your precious infant with their tiny, tiny bodies up with dangerous toxins.

Chocolate Spinach Shake :)

My post-workout creation tonight??

12 oz filtered water
1 scoop Sunwarrior Raw Vegan Chocolate Protein Powder
1 small handful of baby spinach
1/2 frozen banana
a generous sprinkle of spirulina, flax seeds, and cinnamon

all blended together for creamy deliciousness in my tummy :)

What's On My Food?

More and more I feel terribly frustrated and angry at the fact that our food supply is loaded with toxins and poisons, making it seem impossible to take anything into our bodies that isn't somehow tainted.  I can't understand why all of these known carcinogens, chemicals and toxins aren't illegal, especially since they are sprayed directly onto the food being grown.  It's no wonder we are as sick as we are and yet, still, people rarely stop to wonder about their food and the crucial part that it plays in our health and our ability to heal naturally.  Instead, we keep right on eating processed, dead and fake food and then fork out hundreds of dollars for drugs and shots and treatments that only treat the symptoms and never the actual problem.

The reason I go off on that little tantrum is because, going back to food being crucial to our health, even the good stuff is bad stuff.  Organic foods have most certainly seen higher demand but I think there needs to be more.  More people to be aware of what's on and in our food so that more people demand that the food grown and sold be safe and organic, free of poisons.  More people need to be aware  of where true health comes from...and it's from, primarily, our food - in its purest and most natural form.

  It is a terrible injustice that fertilizers and herbicides and pesticides are used so abundantly and carelessly and not disclosed to the consumer.  Think about it - if you were perusing the aisles of produce and decided to pick up an apple, would you still buy it if there were an 'ingredients' list of everything used on this apple and the effect it would have on your health?   Gone would be the bad food because instantly the demand for organic produce would take it's place in record speed, and then organic produce wouldn't be the more costly choice.

Take a look at what is called the Dirty Dozen.  Does it make you want to run out and buy a bushel of apples or bunches of spinach??  Only if it's organic.

Peruse through What's On My Food site, click on a few of your favorite and most commonly used foods and learn just what it is your consuming when you eat that apple, celery stick or strawberry.  Click on the Get Involved tab and do what you can to help spread the word and, therefore, the demand for clean, organic foods in their natural state.  I just did.

Plie Squat

Plie Squat:  Can be done without a weight for beginners.  With toes pointed diagonally outward, wider than shoulder-width, lower yourself into a deep squat until your thighs are parallel to the ground.  Keep your back straight and shoulders back and down.  Knees should not go past your toes on the 'down' position.  Exhale and come back to starting position.  Repeat.  For extra burn, at the end of your set hold your last squat in the down position for 20 seconds.

Vaccine What??

I am opposed to vaccines.  Not new news.  And I am greatly opposed to this ludacris idea of putting candy in the form of vaccine shots.  What brilliant mind thought this up?   "Hey kids!  Medicine, drugs, and vaccines are like eating candy!"   This 'flavored liquid candy in a safe plastic injection' is just plain wrong.  
First of all - the 'flavored liquid candy' is just sugar!  Bad, bad, bad sugar.  I couldn't find anything that posted the ingredients list but most likely you would see the dangerous High-Fructose Corn Syrup along with equally dangerous dyes and coloring.  This is not something fit for consumption for our kids!
Second of all - I have felt very strongly lately that with the rise of parents becoming more informed of the dangers of vaccines - and yes, I would even say uselessness of them, - the vaccine companies are scrambling to dig their greedy little claws into unsuspecting parents even further.  Have you noticed all the vaccine campaign ads popping up like crazy on our televisions and billboards?  They are there to scare you.  Placing fear into people who don't know any better will assure that they get their kids vaccinated for anything and everything.  Is this candy just another tactic for conforming everyone to the idea that vaccines are safe, harmless and even wonderful?  
Now I know that there are people out there who have, sadly, been affected by something that "could have been prevented by a vaccine".  There are an even greater number of people out there who have been affected by the vaccine itself.   However, the more I read and research, the more I am convinced that it all comes down to our diet of cooked, dead, devoid-of-life food.  Even as mothers, the food we eat that we pass onto our infants through breastmilk greatly affects our children's their immune systems and their ability to fight off infection and illness.  Another reason why I urge you to consider eating as much  of a raw food diet as possible, void of as much animals as possible.  The proof is out there if you're willing to find it.
I admit it can be scary.  As a new mom, I went into my traditional doctor's office for a checkup and refused the vaccinations.  I was immediately questioned why and felt judgement from this doctor.  For a tiny second, listening to her and all the reasons why she feels babies should be vaccinated, I admit I wavered and questioned my own beliefs.  But I will not vaccinate my baby without feeling 100% sure about it and that is something I never will be.  And I'm glad I didn't.  I am still convinced that vaccines are useless and cause more sickness and deaths and only serve to make the drug companies richer.

DIY Alkaline Water

When I worked for a holistic chiropractor almost 9 years ago, I had access to the very first model of Ozonated Water (the smell and taste of it was amazing!). I happily hoarded as much water as I could. After leaving there, access to filtered water was a bit trickier.

With our water supply being fluoridated aka POISONED (violating our rights and wreaking havoc for our health) and the environmental issues such as metal toxicity (which is something I struggle with constantly if I do end up using the tap water for anything), etc, etc, I am not keen to drinking or using tap water.

Since I married 4.5 years ago, I have kept a 3 gallon jug of Reverse Osmosis water in my fridge  (the water here also makes me gag so I have to have it!!).  I figured it was the best thing that I had access to while I tried to find answers to what the best option for water.

Recently I have learned about Water Ionizers that alkalize your water and therefore help to alkalize you!  To learn more about the importance of this, I recommend reading The pH Miracle by Robert O. Young and Shelley Young.   Funny thing about all this is...I read this book ten years ago, so I basically had the answer staring me in the face for a decade and I forgot all about it.  I seriously need some brain pills (or maybe some alkaline water???).  It wasn't until perusing through Green Smoothie Girl's blog some time ago that I learned of the importance of this water and how you can obtain it through Water Ionizers.

Alkaline water balances the pH in your body, obviously, and provides you with important minerals needed for cellular function that your body can leech from your bones and tissues if it doesn't get them from your water. I recently read, and I need to remember where I read this so I can site it later, that nearly every disease can be traced back to a deficiency in minerals.  And with all the information I've read over the years, I believe that whole-heartedly.  

The problem??  Water Ionizers be a lit' bit pricey.  I have decided to go off of Robyn Openshaw's recommendation of using a Life Ionizer (www.phmiracleliving.com also has some on their site) and I checked into the group buy.  However, right now it is not something I am going to be able to purchase even with the stellar discount and freebies that I desperately want to take advantage of.  So...I'll be saving my pennies for one of those, too.

Happily, I came across the Do It Yourself version of alkaline water from Young and Raw that I plan on taking advantage of and wanted to pass it along.  Hopefully, you find this helpful if you are in a small boat like me whose large boat has not quite made it in yet :)

Hungry For Change

I highly recommend that you go to this site, watch the trailer and even the first 20 minutes, then download this 10 Step Action Guide, and make it your goal - your life mission!!! - to apply and adhere to the steps given for truly amazing health!  And remember, if you're new to juicing, green smoothies, and foods in their raw and unadulterated state...don't get overwhelmed or discouraged!! Baby steps, people!  It can happen and it WILL happen even if you take it one change a month.  I beg of you!  Health is not in the sodas (even diet soda) and sugary juices, it's not in boxed and processed cereals and bars that are 'part of this complete breakfast', or in the pasteurized dairy drinks and yogurts, in the synthetic man-made vitamins and protein drinks available at GNC or even in the GMO vegetables that are cooked til dead!!!

What is the World Coming To?

Knowledge is power.  Or as I rather say, the RIGHT knowledge is power.  

Disease has become an industry.  The food that fuels disease is an industry. So when the television comes on and I see an add for something that is obviously not healthy being touted for being 'healthy', I want to scream!  It's bad enough that food companies LIE as they advertise, but it's ridiculous the amount of people who would fall for it.  I'm not trying to be insulting.  The ignorance of so many is astounding.  But seriously, wouldn't common sense and a little usage of brain power spell out to people "There is no WAY that is healthy!!" no matter what the TV or magazine ads say??  Isn't it obvious that chocolate milk (just as regular pasteurized and homogenized milk) is full of sugar and can't be healthy just because it has calcium?  Isn't it obvious that children's nutrition should come from real, whole and natural food and not 'jump-started' with a so-called nutritious chocolate drink full of synthetic vitamins and, oh yeah, more sugar???  What about the new Shredded Frosted Wheat that has 'a touch of fruit' in the middle?  The crazy thing is that there really are people out there who would pick that off the shelf of a grocery store and say 'Hey - fruit! It's healthy!'  No! No! NO!!  
Read the ingredients! Become familiar with what you're seeing on those ingredient lists.  In fact, I think I shall compile a list of stuff you'll see on most packaged foods that you will want to avoid.  In the meantime, food it's most natural, unprocessed, uncooked form is the food you should be eating!
