Food, Inc.

As Anita Wolff, a staff member of Britannica’s Advocacy for Animals, says: "I’m left feeling powerless by the huge economic and political forces that work to keep the profits rolling to enormous chemical, agricultural, and food-processing companies who benefit from having Americans eat a certain way. The frustration is made worse by knowing that those forces also work to keep us in the dark about the real costs involved and collude to keep people at all levels—such as farmers, consumers, slaughterhouse workers, union leaders (and, of course, these groups overlap)—from having any place to redress their grievances."
But please, PLEASE, don't NOT watch this because you feel that ignorance is bliss. It's not. This food crisis affects you already whether you choose to look it in it's face or not. There is not one single person that can say they haven't been affected by it somehow, either by themselves or someone they love. Whether its cancer, diabetes, or any of the onslaught of MAN MADE disease and sickness, no one is exempt.
There IS something we can do because we as consumers ARE the greatest decision makers. With each purchase, we are making a choice.

  1. Here's a little something else to consider. In the video it says that the real change in food marketing, growing, etc. started 50 years ago. What big key thing happened back then...the mothers started working full-time out of the home as a norm. This leads to less time at home...which leads to necessary quick dinners...which leads to fast food, frozen dinners, preservatives, etc. Also, single parent families began to rise...many factors in this statistic which leads to most children only knowing that dinner is fast or purchased. It's not just the dollar that led to this. People have wanted money from the beginning of time, but now we have a society lifestyle of fast, convenient and uneducated. Business just tapped into it to make a quick buck come what may. I believe consumers have power to change things...but so do families who teach their children in the home nutrition, well-balanced meals, gardening, etc. I know some moms have to work and many single-parent homes do amazing jobs, but I think there are many reasons why we have to protect the family; it's not just religious - it's every part of our lives.

  2. Thank you for your comment! I completely agree with you. It's mind boggling how much can change and spiral out of control by a shift in the society.
